She lives in Gilbert, AZ, with her family Miracle marks her writing debut. Chow is an engineer by day and middle-grade novelist by night. I hope it created enough of a harmony that readers will enjoy it. The musical terms became a frame for the chapters, and the words emote Amie’s experience through her grief. With the inspiration and the musical terms and the lyrical writing, the story weaved together. It was a new way to play with words, and most importantly, it sounded like Amie’s voice. The line “…everything said afterward was sforzando to my heart,” means Amie was daggered by her mom’s news. I incorporated the musical language into the book. The language feels like the word: sforzando is a sudden strong accent, sostenuto means sustained, staccato is detached. (Of course, this is also because a lot of musical terms are Italian.) Sforzando, sostenuto, staccato. I’d forgotten that music is a language in and of itself. I unearthed my very old copy of Alfred’s Pocket Dictionary of Music, which I’d kept from my piano competition years, and browsed the definitions. And then, I had the idea to replace adjectives and emotions with musical terms. I read my sentences aloud, checking for flow and emotion. So, in Miracle, I restructured my sentences to make them sound like phrases of music. If the feeling was cold and brisk, the descriptions became short and jittery. The authors played with the vocabulary to match a feeling. What I discovered was that those authors phrased their words like their settings. I admire those authors for writing so beautifully. I took a nod from books with lyrical writing: The Book Thief (by Markus Zuzak), Princess Academy (by Shannon Hale), Echo North (by Joanna Ruth Miller), and several others. Amie has the ability to play the worry off her mom’s forehead and lift her dad’s spirits.īecause Amie was a musician, I knew her voice had to be lyrical. I think that’s where the idea of music as comfort came from. My dad loved hymns, and he took comfort in the melodies and harmonies of older songs. That’s where Amie’s dad mirrors mine: his buoyant spirit and outlook on life.Īnd then, there was the music. He had his ups and downs, but he had a great sense of humor. He told me his diagnosis was a wake-up call: to spend less time on work and more time with our family. He studied the Bible extensively and meditated while he was alone. I drove my dad to radiation appointments, stayed with him in the hospital, talked with him while he sat in his recliner. I helped when I could, around classes and marching band. When he was sick, I was in my senior year at a university and lived twenty-five minutes away. I’ve always wanted to write about my dad because he was an amazing person. In the book, Amie’s dad passes away from cancer, and so did mine. I began thinking, what if that happened to a young girl? What if she fulfilled her purpose early in life, then what? That’s when Amie’s voice came to me with the line “Ba-ba always told me I was a miracle.” Amie became a girl who did everything her father asked, and most especially, she became a violinist, with music infusing her life. Simeon was probably an older man, and after meeting Jesus, Simeon declared that his life’s purpose was fulfilled and he could die peacefully. When I was brainstorming for Miracle, I heard a Bible story about Simeon, who waited on the steps of the temple to meet Jesus. Once she’s able to realize that, her music ability comes back-and that’s the miracle. It takes patience, help from her friends, and reconciling with her mom to make her realize that life without her father is different, but can still be joyful. When he passes away, Amie is very lost and loses her ability to play the violin. Miracle is about a young Asian-American girl, Amie Cheung, who loves her father so much she does everything he likes: reads his favorite books, listens to his favorite music, and most importantly, plays his favorite instrument. That was the challenge in my middle grade debut, Miracle. The emotion of what the character was feeling needed the accompanying lyrical words. When it came to writing about music, I knew the lyricism had to follow. To capture them, enthrall them, transform them. The goal is to gently bring a reader into a certain emotion through the words on a page. I’ve performed in shopping malls, recital halls, nursing homes, churches, football and baseball fields, gyms, and in a lot of competitions-long enough to have a good grasp of performance and can emote with the necessary lyricism. I started learning the piano at five, flute at ten, piccolo at eighteen–and then, cello, handbells, and harp, each for a couple of years as an adult. I grew up learning, listening to, and loving music. The best musicians make you feel a certain way through their music, expressing emotion through the notes on a page.

The next time you start to SSH into a server just to launch a Vim or Emacs session, try Tramp instead. Tramp is great for editing files that don't exist on your computer, and the user experience is not noticeably any different from editing a local file. Like Git, Emacs uses your SSH config first and only stops to ask for more information in the event of an error. However, Tramp uses OpenSSH directly, so to avoid interactive prompts, you can also add your hostname, username, and SSH key path to your ~/.ssh/config file. When prompted in the mini-buffer at the bottom of the Emacs window, enter the file name using this syntax: you are required to log in interactively, Tramp prompts you for your password. In the File menu of Emacs, select Open File. Tramp is already included in Emacs 22.1 or greater, so to use Tramp, you just open a file in the Tramp syntax. The most popular and safest protocol for remote editing these days is OpenSSH, so that's the default. The Tramp mode in Emacs (formerly known as RPC mode) stands for "Transparent Remote (file) Access, Multiple Protocol," which spells out exactly what it offers: easy access to remote files you want to edit over most popular network protocols. Use Tramp mode for cloud editingĮmacs has been network-transparent for a lot longer than has been trendy, and today it still provides one of the smoothest remote editor experiences available. Here are six things you may not have realized you could do with Emacs. But if you're a casual Emacs user, you may only be scratching the surface of what it can do for you. That makes for a powerful user interface (UI). To Emacs, everything is Lisp data, so everything can be analyzed and manipulated programmatically. In Emacs, there's no separation between the Lisp engine running the application and the arbitrary text you type into it. This is what Emacs does for the 1958 programming language Lisp. For a Python developer, it's a rich Python environment that can be changed and developed with just a few custom functions in a config file. From the user's perspective, it's the same experience as any text editor. Everything in your text document is a Python object and can be manipulated accordingly. Making a word all capitals, for instance, calls upper(), opening a file calls open, and so on. But every action you perform would be defined by a Python function. You would be able to load files into memory, edit them, and save changes. Imagine using Python's IDLE interface to edit text. If I’m doing a specific shoot I really want to get right I’ll use the RAW images (eg flowers, or landscapes) and then use Polarr. Presets – save your own or use those already available.Colour – vibrance, saturation, whites/blacks etc.I can then do smaller edits on individual photos if needed. If I open photos that fall under this style, I’ll click the relevant present, then bring it down if needed. I’ve saved several of my own – outdoor (garden style), snow days, darker moody, and ‘real’ brighter look. And you can save the edit for next time – making it public or keeping it private. But if you’ve been for a day out or have done a photo shoot, and you want to use the same edit on each photo you can do so. Ok, when you’re working on one detailed image you might want to spend ages on it. You can also batch your work – batch save, watermark, add meta data or copyrights, tag images, resize.Īnd the one things that saves time for photography editing. It’s button based for each editing type and then you use a scale to increase or decrease each edit. The way Polarr works is similar to Lightroom. Generally I can replicated exactly what I want to do, although I did struggle to find the radial mask at first. The way I’ve learnt to use it, is from taking the lightroom steps from my course, and just translated those to try in Polarr. There’s also lots of youtube videos if you’re more a watch and follow person. And I signed up to get weekly email tips on how to use different edit options. But they have a Polarr wiki area you can search on. To run through everything that Polarr does is impossible, because there’s a lot there and I’ve still got lots to learn. I’d used it but got stuck at one point where I needed to use a specific edit so upgraded to access it and haven’t looked back. I thought I was going to have to use Lightroom (the course goes through the edits step by step for each lesson using Lightroom), but Polarr was recommended as a free option. With my current course editing is essential. It’s currently $19.99 for the pro licence, and that’s lifetime access. Once you start looking at spot editing that’s when the free options no longer work. Polarr is a photo editor app which can be used online, mac, ios and android. If you don’t want to pay for subscriptions, then Polarr photo editor works for everything I’ve needed to do as part of my fine art flower photography course. RAW editingīut with RAW, you need to be able to cope with the image size and edit the details. There’s also BeFunky which is free, and Canva – although personally I prefer that for using templates and creating pinnable images rather than actually editing photos. With jpegs, I always used Picmonkey which unfortunately is now paid only (but pretty cheap, so I still use it). But do your storage properly using tags and favourites outside of your editing software, then I’ve found I can do without. With Lightroom you have the organisation side of storage as well as editing. It’s not a lot of money, but the thought of having to pay £120 a year for photo editing software on top of all the other blogging fees I pay, was a little horrifying. With Lightroom you can pay a one off cost, but you don’t get updates with it, or a monthly subscription which is around £10 a month. On recommendation I’ve started using Polarr, and want to share what I’ve learnt about it.Įveryone seems to opt for Lightroom or Photoshop which do the job brilliantly, but in particular with Photoshop there’s a big learning curve. If you’re just getting into your photography and want to use RAW images rather than Jpegs, you need an editing programme rather than the basics you might use online.
